New Galaxy S4s announced

Today Samsung announced several new devices, including three new Samsung Galaxy S4 devices. These devices are the S4 Mini, the S4 Zoom, and the S4 Active. Look just past the fold for the rest of the information...

Let's start with the Mini.

S4 Mini

The details that were announced today are as follows: there's a (yet to be specified) 1.7GHz dual-core processor, Android 4.2.2, GPS, GLONASS, WiFi, 8GB internal memory (expandable up to 64), and 1.5GB of RAM. The display is a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD affair, which will be kept going by a 1,900mAh battery, with the shooters coming in 8- and 1.9-megapixel resolutions. There's LTE support -- as you'd hope -- in 6 band sets, plus single and dual-SIM 3G versions for certain markets. Color choices are white and black (for now), with no official word on price and availability at this time.

Next is the S4 Zoom.

Galaxy S4 Zoom

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom marries an Android 4.2-based smartphone with a 16-megapixel camera that uses a 10x zoom lens.

Samsung's S4 Galaxy Zoom -- which combines an Android smartphone with a 16-megapixel camera and 10x zoom lens -- is real.

The model isn't likely to appeal to the mainstream smartphone buyer. But in an Android marketcrowded with options, a niche that caters to a particular subset can be a reasonable approach -- especially if that subset is as passionate, enthusiastic, and willing to part with money as photographers often are.

Galaxy S4 Active

Samsung's long-rumored Galaxy S4 Active has entered the realm of officialdom at last, and will be out in the U.K. this summer, Samsung has confirmed.

The S4 Active is a rugged version of the regular S4, aimed at outdoorsy types who don't want a phone that'll faint at the first sight of dust or water. The phone has a sealed design that -- Samsung promises -- will protect the S4 Active from water damage for up to 30 minutes of submergence at a depth of one meter.

More than enough protection against dropping it in your pint, then, but Samsung also reckons you'll be able to take underwater photos using the Active's 8-megapixel camera, and a new "Aqua Mode."

It will be released globally, initially in the U.S. and Sweden, Samsung told CNET.
